It seems that early on the ARVN had tan berets too, and the black berets became popularly with the ARVN armor branch. Elements of the Vietnamese Navy, including the LLDN, also wore black. Since the LLDB (including 91st Ranger Battalion/81st Ranger Group) wore green like US Army Special Forces, BDQ (ARVN Rangers) and Airborne troops wore red and this filtered over to Liaison Service/Special Mission Service personnel.
