The Osprey books on the subject are pretty good, there is one for Special Forces Camps and for Fire Bases if I recall correctly.

Natasha: Is Peabody and Sherman?
Boris: Silly girl! Is moose and squirrel.

Do not forget looking at the many aerial photos available in print and on line.

I agree with peabody the osprey book would be a good starting point.

As for Osprey books I have two. Firebases and Special Forces Bases. Both are invaluable resources when constructing your firebase. Take a look at the pictures I posted from my most recent convention game and you will see pictures of my firebase there. There are also pictures of the firebase in more detail laid out in the Recon 09 "Send in the Blues AAR" as well. That one has the concentrina wire, the mortar and arty pits and positions, the HQ bunker and support conex containers. Another good place to check out a really detailed firebase in 1/285 scale is GHQ's website under VIETNAM wargaming. I highly recommend it! In addition I will be positing some pictures of my firebase and the watchtower construction on my blog at http://armchairgeneral1.blogspot.com when I get around to it.

Yep, the Osprey books do have some very nice diagrams and drawings to salivate over.

I am sure you have found these already but just in case:

DTIC's search feature has been down lately or I would've immediately posted this document. Its the Army Concept Team in Vietnam's 132 page report of Fire Support Base Defense. The diagrams are generally useless, but the text descriptions are very detailed.
