Cold Wars '17

Postby timw42 » Mon Mar 13, 2017 8:06 am

It's that time again.

This time, we go to Dien Bien Phu, were elements of the 1st Legion Paras and 5th BPVN, with tank support, will try to break through the Vietminh trenches to relieve the Algerian riflemen at Gabrielle.

No lurking in the jungle this time--this will be an open field stomping match.

A few pics from the weekend. Alas, the French did not do as well as historically. The Vietminh player set up his forces and support weapons very well and stymied the French attempts to break through, though the first trench line was cleared.

One tank was lost to AT fire.

The assault.

Great looking game there, good work!

One good point with Bolt Action is that it works on a relatively open table like the one you used here. Did you find that BA version 2 was much of an improvement?

To be honest, we stayed with BA original rules--I didn't have time to really digest them and the guys I was playing with agreed they weren't ready for primetime, either.

I like some of the ideas in it, but haven't yet really tested it.

So far what I've seen improvement wise in BA v2 is snipers are more deadly, the un-occuppied transports still being able to use their weapons was needed, officers can be more effective, and using the blast template is deadly. All good improvements. I haven't given BA v2 a good read through but I've played a few games and the things listed above were what were noticed in the games I played. For what it's worth.

Definitely going to try it. I like the template rules and revised arty rules.

Missed you, Tom. Maybe see you at Fall In?

Not sure about H-con.
