Marine game table ; Marines have to 'defend' a 3xA4-sized area of the rear table edge . An ARVN police unit has a checkpoint next to the road to the left of the firebase.

It's night-time, it's raining ,... visibility is not quite 100m .

Image

Image

Image

a bit of hidden movement later ...a contact on the eastern hill, ... then a barrage out of nowhere

Image

and things get interesting ...

Image

Image

Image

Image

and the Firebase defences are overrun, Sappers (coming in from the ARVN perimeter) destroy a single Arty piece and the Arty Bty HQ (but not the FDC) .... the ARVN post is overrun and destroyed .

continuing ...

Because this is a campaign game , the game didn’t end there … and the most amazing thing was yet to happen;

As the NVA Sappers swarmed the wire and forward trenches the Marine Bronco FAC shows up finally, and does a strafing run along the front of the firebase .
Image

..and then is shot down as it leaves the table by an AAMG almost right underneath it .

the Sappers start to pull back , grabbing a casualty and moving away along the paths they took to for their own RV's

Image

The shooting down of the FAC delays a planned spooky gunship run for a turn. But it arrives now targeting the AAMG that took down the FAC. …. And is immediately ‘ambushed’ by the AAA battery in the NVA back corner . The spooky takes a battering and is lucky not to fall from the sky too.
Meanwhile the Sappers get away . The ZPU AAA get away , .. the second spooky gunship manages to shoot up remaining AAMG without much result .
And it’s all over !

Image

Here is a shot of the NVA player lining up the elements that made it off the table (getting ready to count it all up for campaign purposes) … the last elements are still exiting the table in this pic.
The rank of elements closest to the table edge are the elements that carried off the second rank of casualty elements ,… and so on thru the group . The ZPU and other HQ elements withdrew voluntarily (so aren’t casualties) .
What was amazing that for the size of the battle , and near 50% NVA casualties, was that only Seven NVA casualty elements (and five suicide bombers ) were not recovered .
In processing the NVA casualties apparently one of the NVA sappers picked up (and carried out) a Marine casualty stand by mistake . Called as three US PoWs . …Ouch !

Image

.. a fantastic game ! ... the NVA Commander and troops did amazing well tonight ! ...

As this was a campaign game we will have to see what the 'result' from this battle is , maybe this NVA will have it's morale raised and/or it's Commander get promoted.

Congratulations for today Comrade Major Colin !

Hiya Yass,

yes OTS 15mm , ... figures from Flashpoint, Battlefront and Peter Pig .

Rules are a homegrown (-ing) set . Are playing out a 'career' campaign whereby players (representing a Unit) 'accumulate merit' (measured over a few axes) over the course of a few battles (here with a storyline, in 1CTZ ) / 'standard scenarios). ...balancing and 'unbalancing' the scenarios in a 'fair' way is sorta where we are up to.
The US player with the TV crew for example earns a few extra career points because they went away alive and with good 'copy' . protecting these "VIPs" was a "secondary mission' for Armour Commander .

These games were designed to be about command procedures with more than two players. .. and test out 'attacking fortifications' rules . Both games were pretty "fortified", which may not be immediately clear. .
:cheers
