Nam68: Platoon / FMJ project

Postby Silent Invader » Sun Feb 12, 2017 2:17 am

This is my first substantive post here so hopefully all will work as intended. :). I've already posted this at LAF so apologies if you've seen it already (I don't normally double post across forums).

I'm just starting a Movie-style project with the US element derived from Platoon.

To be getting on with, I've decided to make 2/3 of The Platoon (20 minis):

https://www.silentinvader.uk/index_w_ns ... s-USA.html

Obviously, the sensible thing would be to use commercially available minis but I'd quite like to get as close to the movie as possible. As a fair few will need their height adjusted and other small changes, I'm having a go at converting plastics. The parts are sourced from the Bolt Action USMC (plus a few German Grenadiers) with rifles, canteens, etc from the Project Z survivors.

As this is a movie rendition, I tried to be steered by what was worn and carried in the movie. The Project Z M16A2 was converted to a M16A1 (there are holes drilled into the barrel shroud). The movie load out varies a little bit to most of the historical references I've seen on-line, as they carry what I think is the Tropical Pack with ET attached. I've decided to go for Fighting Order, which in the movie is usually represented with a small pouch over the butt that I don't recognise. IIRC the only time a 1956/1961 Butt Pack appears it's on the company commander calling in the napalm (and in that scene he's wearing later suspenders). I've decided to give all of mine the 56/61 Butt Pack with paired canteens and no ET (as it's on the pack).

First up is an average height guy, Ebenhoch.

Anyways, the first mini sets the process for all that follow so I'd appreciate thoughts on obvious oddities etc, as I'd hate to make them all and then discover a major error/omission. Thanks in advance.  :)

This will be a cool project. Good conversion work on the Bolt Action minis. Look forward to seeing more.

Thanks guys. Yeah I posted similar at LAF. :)

The project is a 'labour of love'.... I must have watched Platoon some 30 or more times.

Wow what a cool project, and yes, a lot of labor!

As an aside, a site I always found useful for movie weapons is the Internet Movie Firearms Database, which folks probably already know about. Here is their page for Platoon:

We've been up on that hill ten times, and they still don't think we're serious.

That is a dern nice looking sculpt!
Grunt Sgt: "We got 6 confirmed kills..."
Intel Officer: "NVA or VC?"
Grunt Sgt: "Monkeys. And they didn't say what side they were on."

Thanks :) I'm having a go at making shorter and taller versions at the mo. And very short VC. ;)

The phishing ref: is that to the imfdb link? I've only been there via my iphone which isn't flagging anything. :(

You may have to show your work to Warlord. Get us a Vietnam game and plastic minis out of them. :rocks

I'm working on some of their plastic Grenadiers now and have some of the plastic USMC in the work queue. I may have to revisit this when I get ready to give some conversions a shot.

Thanks guys :)

Regarding Warlord, if the USMC were sculpted digitally (the Project Z definitely were) then most of the work is already done. Obviously just leaves the not so small matter of the cost of the injection moulds. VC would probably be a relatively easy fix as they already have the basis for AKs and RPGs. NVA would be a bigger job though, as would a HUEY kit, but they'd be really nice to have ..... lol One can dream ;)

Regarding the VC, one thing that surprised me is that (presently) there's only about 10cm height difference between the avg American and the avg Vietnamese. In movies etc the VC often seem so much smaller. I'm making my VC from Perry ACW Confederates and dropping their height quite considerably. I'll put up some pics when they are more advanced. :)

Thanks for the interest :)

I've done the 'plastics' bit for three of the VC conversions but have yet to add the GS; I've also done the plastic bits for a short grunt (Ace) and a tall one (Harold). Have been a little side-tracked by palm trees, bunkers and spider holes but should be able to break out the GS at the weekend. ;)
